Who to Notify When you Move

Joseph Coupal - Tuesday, May 15, 2012

The number of things on your moving checklist can be daunting, but one item you can not overlook is making sure everyone who needs to know that you are moving or have moved is aware of your new address.

Make a list
Once you start thinking about it you will find that there are dozens of people and businesses that will need your new address, doctors and credit card companies, and everyone in between. Start by making a list of people you need to notify. This allows you to keep track and stay organized.

People to notify of your new address include:

  • People you owe money to: Your bank, credit card companies and student loan officer will need your new address, so make sure they know.
  • The government: The state should also be on your list – you only have a certain amount of time to change your address on your driver’s license after you move. Same with your car tag and voter registration.
  • Your employer: Your employer will need your new address to mail out important tax documents in the beginning of the year.
  • Your insurance companies: Your car insurance is based partly on where you live. You could save money simply by moving.
  • Health and education providers: These include your doctors and schools for you or your children.
  • Magazines and newspapers: If you want those delivered to your new place, you need to tell them where you live.
When you are moving, always fill out a change of address form with the post office, but don’t rely on this for your important correspondence. That should really only be used as a safety net. You can also fill out the change of address form online, but remember, mail forwarding only lasts so long.

Massachusetts Real Estate Market is Really Looking Up

Joseph Coupal - Tuesday, May 08, 2012

Now is a great time to move in Massachusetts. The Massachusetts Association of REALTORS (MAR) reported that March 2012 home sales were up again compared to the same time last year for the ninth straight month. Also, the number of single-family homes put under agreement in March went up again for the 11th straight month compared to the same time in 2011.

MAR also states that more people are going to open houses in the Northeast than in any other part of the country. Realtors are increasingly positive about both sales and price increases.

In Massachusetts, many realtors believe this as a sign that the buyer's market is nearing its end. This report is a breath of fresh air. If you live in Massachusetts and you are selling or buying a home, now is the perfect time to consider a move. If you have already bought or sold your home and now need to consider you moving options, contact Marathon Moving. Make the rest of your relocation process stress free with help from us, you Boston Moving Company.

Planning Your Move Saves Time, Money, and Stress

Joseph Coupal - Tuesday, May 01, 2012

Does the thought of moving stress you out?

It can be a challenge, but moving does not have to be overwhelming.

If you think “big picture” about all of your moving needs from the start, you can plan an easy and efficient move.

Think big about your moving checklist
The very first thing you want to do is keep a moving checklist. This helps you make sure no detail is missed. Marathon Moving has a comprehensive moving checklist that will help you plan.

Think big about some questions
Here are a few questions that you need to ask yourself at the beginning of the moving process.

The answers to these questions will depend on your specific situation.

Think big about your moving budget
Whether you are going with a full-service or a do-it-yourself move, you will surely have a budget. Sit down and form your moving budget, factoring in the cost of packing supplies, moving costs and incidentals. Keep the budget close at hand when you are calling for quotes from moving or truck rental companies.

Think big about your packing plan
If you are hiring packers, this may be taken care of for you. If not, you will need a system to make sure everything gets to the right room when it arrives in your new home.

Color-coding boxes can help you tell at a glance which box goes in which room. Make sure each box is clearly labeled. Always pack a priority box that contains supplies (bedding and a toothbrush) to get you through the first days in your new home.

When you plan out your move and think big picture, you can experience an easier and more efficient move with minimal hassle. Planning your move carefully can save you time, money and stress. Need help with your move? Contact Marathon Moving.

Helping Kids Cope with a Move

Joseph Coupal - Tuesday, April 17, 2012

You are faced with the decision to move. Making the decision itself can be stressful, especially if you have children. Making the decision itself does not alleviate the stress, unfortunately. As disruptive and stressful as moving can be for parents, the experience can be even more difficult for kids. Kids do not usually take part in the decision to move and they may not understand it.

During the moving process, kids can need some time and special attention. Here are some tips to make the move less stressful for the kids.

Discussing the Move With Kids

No matter what the circumstances, the most important way to prepare kids to move is to talk about it.

Try to give them as much information about the move as soon as possible. Answer questions completely and truthfully, and be receptive to both positive and negative reactions. Even if the move means an improvement in family life, kids don't always understand that and may be focused on the frightening aspects of the change.

Involving kids in planning for the move as much as possible makes them feel like participants in the house-hunting process or the search for a new school. This can make the change feel less like it's being forced on them.

If you're moving locally, try to take your kids to visit the new house (or see it being built) if possible. Explore the new neighborhood.

For interstate moves or international moves, provide as much information as you can about the new home, the new city and state or country. Use the Internet to learn about the community. Learn where kids can participate in favorite activities. See if a relative, friend, or even a real estate agent can take pictures of the new house and new school for your child.

Moving Pianos and Other Large Furniture

Joseph Coupal - Monday, April 09, 2012

We have all seen those hilarious skits on moving Pianos. Many people have had some very bad luck when moving big and expensive pieces of furniture or equipment, either they have been hurt or the furniture has been hurt.

However you would like to complete your move is up to you, take advantage of our packing services or pack yourself. But, when it comes to pool tables and pianos, Marathon Moving  suggest you leave the packing to us.

Pool Tables need to be fully disassembled with felt removal before they are moved. We can arrange for the dis-assembly and reassembly of your pool table in your new home.

Pianos are often valuable  heirlooms or antiques, but regardless, they are always large and expensive. Pianos require strength and moving knowledge. Often a crane is required to move your piano, we can do that.

Do you need storage for your piano, pool table or other large piece of furniture? We have a climate controlled storage facilities. For moving your large furniture  Contact Marathon Moving.

Purge while You Pack for your Move

Joseph Coupal - Monday, April 02, 2012

Are you getting ready to move? Use this opportunity to purge your home of things you don’t need and don’t use. The cost of moving is high, why pay to move those items you just don’t need? Most experts agree that moving is stressful. Relieve some of that stress by eliminating belongings.

Don’t know where to start or how to begin? Just ask, we have a list of organizing and clean out companies that we rely on. But the best way to start is to just make a pile of things that you really don't need or use. Why spend the time, money, and energy moving unnecessary belongings to your new home. If you haven't used it (or worn it) for a year or more, sell it, get rid of it, or give it away; you will never use it.

Salvation army and Big Brothers Big Sisters will come and pick up your gently used belongings, or you can drop them at any drop box. Looking for more stress relieving moving tips? Contact Marathon Moving.

Organize for Spring, Put Some Stuff in Storage

Joseph Coupal - Tuesday, March 27, 2012

Spring has arrived in Massachusetts. Whether you are about to put your home on the market or you just want to do some organizing, now is the perfect time. Time to get your home airy and full of light by organizing and getting rid of unwanted items.

But there are ways to keep the stress out of organizing. Here are some easy strategies:

  • Focus on one task or one room at a time. If you feel really overwhelmed by looking at all of the clutter, start in one room or one closet. Make piles of what you want to keep, what you want to get rid of and what you want to put into storage. Focus on organizing only the area you see.
  • Don’t get burn out by doing too much. Set a timer for 15 or 30 minutes and then take a break. Just take a short break, and then begin again, make sure you set the timer.
  • Organize with a friend. If you have struggled with organizing throughout your life, social organizing works great.  Ask a friend to be part of your process; you'll accomplish much more in a shorter time, and it will be fun.
  • Organizing does not just mean cleaning the closets. Maybe you want to remove some furniture, artwork or rugs to give your home a less cluttered and more spacious feel. Removing some furniture in the spring and summer can give your home a whole new feel and better air flow.
Now, you have piles of stuff to be donated. Put that right in your car and get rid of it. For the items you want to put into storage, Marathon Moving can also accommodate all of your storage needs. We can provide various options all of which come with 24-hour security, fire prevention systems, pest control, dry/climate monitored rooms, and more. Our professional storage facility will provide you the peace of mind needed when you are away from what you treasure most.

Our storage warehouses are climate-controlled facilities designed for the long-term preservation of your belongings, even art work, records, and CD's. Our warehouses are staffed around the clock, so security and assistance are always available. Contact us for information and rates.

Moving Boxes Need to Be Designed for Moving

Joseph Coupal - Monday, March 19, 2012

When you are moving into a new home, relieving any portion of stress seems like a good idea. Saving money on the move can be a great stress reliever for many. Often this means self-packing. For others having the moving company pack and move you is money well spent and well worth it.

If you are a self packer, don’t try to save money by cutting corners on moving boxes. You may consider yourself a savvy penny pincher by collecting boxes from grocery and liquor stores and the office supply room. This may seem like a great cost saving idea, but in addition to the time, energy and effort this takes, the boxes themselves are compromised.

Marathon’s moving boxes are manufactured for moving household goods. Our packing supplies provide the best protection for your special belongings. The boxes are sized to fit across the floor of the moving van and are also designed to be stacked 4 or 5 high without damage. This saves time loading the moving van but also reduces movement among the boxes which can cause damage to your belongings.

Marathon Moving offers free delivery of moving supplies to your home for orders over $100.

Relax, Let us Pack and Move You

Joseph Coupal - Monday, March 12, 2012

Make your move faster and less stressful, consider hiring a professional movers to help you pack AND move to your new home in Boston or out of state. Utilizing a full-service moving company, rather than packing yourself, can often be well worth the cost. Do you have kids, a family, a full-time job? If so, and you are moving, your time is valuable and you are the perfect candidate for a full-service move. Why worry about packing and moving, you have enough going on.

Marathon Movers offers packing services. We can pack everything from coats to beds, and sheets to televisions, and we do it quickly, carefully and efficiently. Another option to consider: professional movers pack only the large items, like furniture, televisions or computers and you can pack the smaller items.

Professional movers come to your home and usually in a day they will safely and securely pack your belongings into boxes. Does this sound relaxing? If so, contact Marathon Moving.

Organize and Save Time and Money on Your Move

Joseph Coupal - Monday, March 05, 2012

Many people opt for packing themselves when they move, some want to save money others want to have more control over their belongings.

If you want to pack yourself, or at least pack the smaller items you can. Then to make your life easier, hire a moving company to move the boxes and to transport your furniture. You can also hire a moving company to pack up the larger items or the more expensive items like your television and artwork.

How you choose to move is entirely up to you and your lifestyle and budget. But no matter how you do it, make it easy for yourself and the movers.

If you pack yourself, or any portion of your belongings, clearly label your boxes. That way, once your belongings have reached your destination, the movers put all the right boxes in the corresponding rooms for you. What is an easy way to be sure your boxes end up in the right rooms? Color code them.

That’s right. Yellow for kitchen, pink for your daughter’s room, red for your room, blue for the TV room, etc. Put colored stickers on the box and the same color on the door frame of the room. That way, if you have a dining room that you’ve chosen to use as a play room instead, the movers can tell by the color on the door frame.

Be sure to also label the boxes with the room name as well in case the sticker falls off. This will help save time and money on your move.
