More and more we see people moving appliances where in the past they were left behind for the new tenants. Moving appliances does take some coordination.
The moving company will move the appliances but there is a little more to it than that, including some scheduling on your part. The homeowner needs to be sure to properly prepare for the transportation of major appliances and other home furnishings. Depending on the appliance to be moved, it may need to be serviced. “Servicing” means preparing appliance for a move to safely withstand handling, transit or storage.
This process can include bracing a washer tub, disconnecting an ice maker, capping off a gas line, and special handling of satellite dish components.
Gas appliances and water lines to refrigerators need to be disconnected and have the lines capped. Your mover will not be able to move these appliances without this having been done in advance of your move date.
In order to move front load washers, the shipping bolts need to be in place. Without them, the washer can be damaged during your move. If you do not have the bolts, you should call the store you purchased the washer from and request new ones.
Thorough cleaning and drying of appliances, particularly the refrigerator, freezer and stove tops, are necessary. This is especially important if they will be in storage for any length of time.
Remember that Moving companies do not:
- Disconnect appliances or reconnect them in the new residence.
- Disconnect utilities
- Remove or install window air conditioners.
- Perform any kind of wiring or plumbing services.
