Should You Tip Your Mover? – Boston, MA

This is a common question that people often wonder about. In American, we tip in the service industry, and moving is a service. Should you tip the movers?

Most people who work in the service industry generally receive a tip for a job well-done. So the answer is ‘yes’. But how do you decide what to base your tip on? Local moves are billed hourly, so the speed and efficiency of your move affects the cost. So this is one thing to base your tip on. Also, the care for your belongings that you are moving and of course, how easy the guys were to work with. Generally, these are the factors people consider when deciding on a tip. <b<></b<>

For the most part, people tend to tip the move crew on-site. But because people carry less cash, most moving companies allow you to add the tip to the bill when paying by credit card.

Do to the high regulations regarding interstate moves, you cannot however, add a tip to those bills.

An appropriate tip is about $20 – $50 dollars per guy per day, depending on how happy you were with the move. This generally works out to 7%-12% of the bill. We hope you found this moving tip on tipping movers helpful. <<>

Coordinating Office Or Commercial Moves in Boston

Moving can be stressful, but moving your office can be VERY stressful. If you are moving an office, there are some tricks and tips to put into practice to make your office move as smooth as possible. With planning and organizing your office move, your office will experience less down-time.

For office moves, planning and coordination are imperative. In fact, the earlier you start to plan and get organized, the smoother the move will go. Pick a ‘move coordinator’ from within your office to be the liaison between your company, the employees and the moving company.

First and foremost, be sure that your employees understand that they need to empty out their desks completely. More often than not, desks will be moved on end, so anything left inside could be damaged or lost. Moving companies will often supply rent-a-crates for commercial moves. Desk contents can be ‘bagged and tagged’ and put into a crate with files. Moving companies will supply “open first” stickers for all important boxes and crates.

If your employees are packing for your office move, use heavy crates when packing bookcases. Once books are packed, remove all shelves and pins from the bookcase and be sure they are affixed to the bookcase for which they belong. Label the books and the bookcase they belong with the same way.

As far as filing cabinets, these can be moved with the files inside and intact if, as a general rule, the filing cabinet is 3 drawers or less.  Larger filing cabinets should be emptied, however, the bottom two drawers of four and five drawer file cabinets can be left full, but the top drawers should be emptied. Again, moving crates can be used to transport files.

Locking filing cabinets will often inadvertently get locked during the moving process so, if your filing cabinets lock, be sure you have the key! However, do not leave the key in the lock because the keys can be bent or damaged during the move.

Always contact a shredding company. Office moves also result in ‘purging’. So have shredding bins places around the office where employees can place no longer need papers and files for shredding.

While packing your office, always create a floor plan for the new office. For every item that is being moved, there should be a notation on the new floor plan for where that item should go. This will make moving into your new office space as easy and smooth as possible.

It’s Fall, Why this May be the Best Time to Move – Boston, MA

If you are considering a residential move, the fall may be the best time to do it. For one thing, in the fall, most moving companies will offer discounted rates or discounted rate days.

Another benefit of moving off-peak is the experience of your moving crew. During the summer, most moving companies need to bring in extra employees, most often college students, in order to meet the demand of the peak moving season. These are not year-round, full-time movers so they don’t have the same experience of the year round moving crew. By the fall, most moving companies in Boston have gone back to their regular, experienced staff.

The weather is another benefit. This is the favorite time of year for those who do physical labor outside. Without the temperature extremes of the winter and summer are a benefits. Extreme weather conditions can lead to slower downs in the speed of the move leading to a longer move time. This can save you a little bit of money.

Finding Reputable Moving Companies – Boston, MA

There are too many people pretending to be moving companies. These companies scam movers and contaminate the reputation of professional moving companies everywhere. Do your homework before you choose a moving company. A common question is do moving companies need a professional license to operate. Depending on where you live, the answer is not that straight forward: Sometimes, yes and sometimes, no.

An interstate moving company, one that crosses state lines, must have a license issued by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, the government agency that regulates the trucking industry in the United States. Once you get the moving firm’s license number, you can check the www.fmsca.dot.gov website. Here you can view any complaints against the company, safety information and contact information for the parent firm if you hire the mover and a problem later develops.

Movers that work only in-state don’t need an FMCSA license. But many states and counties have licensing requirements of their own, or at least have laws and regulations that locally oriented movers must follow.

You can get details from the government organization that oversees intrastate moves. This is often the state’s Department of Transportation, public utilities commission or consumer-affairs department.

In order to obtain authority to operate in Massachusetts, moving companies must be licensed by the MDPU. Moving companies in Boston and surrounds are licensed by the MDPU are required to carry a minimum amount of cargo insurance. However, your ability to recover for loss or damage is dependent upon your agreement with the mover. All movers are also required to file a Tariff containing the rates charged for various moving services.
