Castle Island

Castle Island is a small peninsula located at 2010 William J Day Blvd, Boston, MA 02127. It’s actually the site of Fort Independence, one of the first fortifications built in Boston following the British occupation of the city during the American Revolution. It was later turned into a park and now boasts some amazing views of the city. If you’re looking to get away from it all, this is your place. The island has no road access or nearby shops so it will leave you feeling like you’re miles away from everything. As you can imagine with such seclusion, Castle Island is not exactly packed with tourists every day; if at all. If you want to know more about what this little slice of nature has to offer, read on for our comprehensive guide to Castle Island.

The Best Time to Visit Castle Island

Given the island is only a stone’s throw from the city, you could visit all year round, but the best time to visit Castle Island is during the summer months. During the spring and fall, there is a good chance you will encounter a fair amount of tourists, especially when there are events going on at the park. During the summer, many locals use the island as their summer retreat and it is usually pretty empty. During the winter, the island is closed to the public and can only be accessed via Fort Independence. This is when Castle Island is at its most peaceful as there are no visitors around to ruin the experience. You can also try visiting during the spring and fall, but be aware that it will probably be less secluded during these times.

Where to Stay on Castle Island

There are no accommodations on Castle Island, but you can stay in the nearby city of Boston. You could stay downtown or in a nearby suburb, but it is worth bearing in mind that you will be leaving the city and benefits of the modern world. There is a good chance you will want to visit some of the nearby attractions, so it may make more sense to stay in Boston. We would recommend staying in the South End area. It is one of the most diverse areas in the city and has a great mix of historic buildings and modern hotels. The area is close to some of the best restaurants and bars in Boston. Here is more on local attractions.

History of Castle Island

The island was originally part of a large salt marsh that stretched all the way from Boston to the Neponset River. In 1657, Deacon William Hosack obtained a land grant that included all the marshland between the Neponset and the Mystic rivers. Hosack built a home on the property, but he and his family were forced to abandon it due to flooding. In 1687, a surveyor paid a visit to the property, which at this point was owned by Thomas Macy. He measured the land and found that the nearest point on the river was a mile downstream. He suggested the land should be used for fortifications, writing that its “advantage is, that it commands the town on both sides of the river”. It wasn’t until the American Revolution that the land came to be known as Castle Island.

Tips for Visiting Castle Island

– Don’t take the island for granted – it is far less crowded than the city and has a completely different feel. It is also a reminder that we are living in one of the most unique cities in the world. If you want to visit a city with a rich history and a unique culture, go to Boston. – Bring some food – there are no shops or restaurants on the island, so you’ll want to bring enough food to last you for a few days. If you are staying downtown Boston, the best bet is to buy some groceries beforehand. – Explore the water features – the park has a number of statues and water features that are worth exploring.
